Blossoming Mind

Small group English for Y3 to Y6

English for 11+ taught properly

Private and group tuition online or at home. Creative writing, grammar and comprehension — with homework set, papers marked and progress actually measured.

12 children max · 1 specialist teacher + 3 teaching assistants per class

Three pillars

Everything a young writer needs

Our English curriculum rests on three foundations. We teach them together, because good writing depends on all three.

  • Creative writing — a planner and pens on a desk.

    Creative Writing

Complex grammatical structures, figurative devices and varied sentence forms. Each child finds a voice worth reading.

  • Grammar — a dictionary page viewed through a magnifying glass.

    Grammar

The literary textbook on the desk, not the worksheet in the drawer. We teach the rules that make sentences sing.

  • Comprehension — a stack of leather-bound classic books.

    Comprehension

Lifting textual evidence, providing analysis and linking back to the question. High-order vocabulary built in.

What we offer

A path for every family

The name in practice

Children blossom when they’re taught with care

We plant the grammar. We water the reading. We give the writing sunlight. And then we watch — because this work is never rushed.

I have worked with Shalaka for over a decade as her Deputy Headteacher and then as her Headteacher. She is an outstanding teacher — the children she teaches make impressive progress. She has particularly made a significant impact on our school with her Year 6 teaching of grammar, spelling and punctuation. Shalaka has tutored my own child since Year 2, and I would recommend her as a private tutor without hesitation.

J has attended The Blossoming Mind small group sessions for almost a year. During this time, we have seen his confidence in English comprehension and writing flourish. Shalaka’s structured approach and clear communication has enabled J to attempt comprehension tasks independently and with confidence. Her unique style and passion for writing has inspired J to think creatively whilst applying the literary techniques taught to him each session. We would recommend Shalaka’s small group sessions to any families preparing for 11+ assessments.

Mrs L has helped me to develop my knowledge of grammar and my comprehension skills. Before I started tuition with Mrs L, I used to find it challenging to plan creative writing tasks. The tutorials have taught me how to approach writing tasks and apply lots of different English techniques. I look forward to my lessons and homework and find it really helpful when I get feedback from Mrs L. I have also learnt how to approach 11+ English papers more confidently. Thank you for the wonderful teaching, Mrs L!
